In Pakistan and India, almonds are the base ingredients of pasanda-style curries. Badam halwa is a sweet made from almonds with added coloring. Almond flakes are added to many sweets (such as sohan barfi), and are usually visible sticking to the outer surface.
Almonds can be processed into a milk substitute called almond milk or badam milk; the nut's soft texture, mild flavour, and light colouring (when skinned) make for an efficient analog to dairy, and a soy-free choice, for lactose intolerant people and vegans.
To prepare Almond /Badam Halwa make sure you have high energy and are in true spirit to cook, because when you start off cooking you will need to stir and stir and stir continously as it takes nearly half hour to cook the Badam halwa.
If you relax, the halwa can burn in a second and spoil the taste of halwa. As this is a rich dessert, do add sufficient ghee which enhances the flavor and taste and further will make it easy to cook so that the risk of halwa sticking at the bottom of the vessel is avoided.
Indian halwas are characteristically loaded with ghee, and when gently warmed before eating, simply glisten with the sheen of the ghee. Vah! – What can be a more special dish for a special person? Badam halwa is absolutely delicious, aromatic and melts in your mouth – just like good halwas should! Everyone knows that almonds are a virtual powerhouse of nutrients.
They are high in mono-unsaturated fats which are associated with reduced risk of heart disease. They are believed to lower LDL cholesterol levels and promote cardiovascular health. Almonds are loaded with protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
They are also rich in antioxidants and high in Vitamin E, both of which may help slow down the harmful effects of aging. In fact, when you eat a few almonds everyday, you are actually popping a couple of vitamin pills. Well, not quite, but you know what I mean!
Badam Halwa is a rich comforting dessert, popular in a lot of cultures and can be made with a variety of ingredients like the carrots, semolina/suji, nuts etc and sometimes contains milk or condensed milk and more often than not - Ghee.
