Keema/ Kheema is traditionally made of minced mutton or lamb and is popular in making a variety of Mughlai dishes, for example Keema-roti which is considered to be one of the wholesome and scrumptious breakfast dishes in Hyderabad. Most of the Hyderabadi non-vegetarian eaters love eating keema-roti for the breakfast while in north India, Keema matar is a popular dish widely available in most restaurants. Soya keema is one unique dish that caters to all the vegetarians.
It is the vegetarian version of Keema matar, offering the same taste, flavor and texture. It is also quick to cook with a high protein content equal to that of the meat and contains no fat. Keema or also spelled as Kheema or Qeema is a traditional meat dish of Pakistan and India. Originally this word actually means minced meat. The minced meat is typically goat meat or lamb meat in south Asia, while the common type of ground meat is beef in other western countries.
In the similar fashion, you could also get minced meat of port, lamb and poultry. Keema can be made from almost any meat, can be cooked by stewing or frying, and can be formed into kababs. Keema is also sometimes used as a filling for samosas or naan. Ingredients of Keema in South Asia usually include minced meat, ghee/butter, onions, garlic, and ginger together, finely chopped green chillies with spices including cinnamon, bay leaves and cloves. Some varieties may include peas (matar) and/or liver (kaleji).
Keema is also spelled as Kiyma in Turkey and most of the muslim community. Keema is often used as filling for samosas or naan. Most non-vegetarian love eating lamb/ meat/ mutton or minced meat dishes than chicken dishes! Meat dishes are just mouth-watering and salivating. Mutton is rich in fat and carbohydrates and feels good eating during winter months as it warms up the body and is also a great source of protein.
