Dal Dhokli (Dumpling cooked in lentil curry) is a traditional delicacy from the Gujarati cuisine made with pieces of seasoned dough (wheat flour) cooked in lentils and topped off with a striking tempering, lemon juice and fresh coriander leaves. This dish is popularly prepared in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan and is also done in different variations. Dal Dhokli can be served as meal by itself with side of plain rice accompanied by kachumber, pickle and roasted papadam.

Dal Dhokli is a healthy dish as it is dal base (lentil soup like consistency) with wheat and gram flour pasta like textured dumplings. Made with pulses and flour, it is a healthy and nutritious dish which is savored by all age groups. Generally Dal Dhokli is different from the regular food eaten in India.

Dal Dhokli is a delicious one pot dish which is flavored with a variety of spices and condiments making it delicious as well as completely wholesome. Makes a yummy and delicious gravy with lentils being the liquid/ soup for the dumplings and the flour in the dumplings thickens the dal a little bit and makes it into a saucy consistency like dish. Dal Dhokli is said to have originated in Gujarat state of India. Though as per few people the dish belongs to Rajasthan.

This dish is also popular in Maharashtra and many other states of India. Gujarati cuisine is primarily a vegetarian cuisine. A typical Gujarati thali consists of roti (flat Indian bread known as rotli in Gujarati), daal or kadhi, rice and sabzi or shaak (a dish made up of different combinations of vegetables and spices, which may be stir fried, spicy or sweet). The dishes can vary widely in flavor and heat, depending on a given family's tastes as well as the region of Gujarat they are from.

North Gujarat, Kathiawad, Kachchh, and South Gujarat are the four major regions of Gujarat that all bring their own style to Gujarati food. Many Gujarati dishes are distinctively sweet, salty, and spicy at the same time. To prepare this saucy Dumpling in lentil curry, firstly boil the dal and peanuts in a pressure cooker till soft and keep aside. Heat little ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, garlic, asafetida and finally the boiled dal. Add kokum, turmeric powder, chili powder, sugar and curry leaves.

Boil and add salt to taste. To make the dhokli dumplings, mix flour, salt, turmeric, chili powder, asafetida and little oil and make to stiff dough with water. Knead well and roll out into 10cm disc. Cut the disc into diamonds or squares with a knife and drop them into the boiling dal mixture.

When all the dhokli pieces are put in, boil the dal for a further 15 minutes on a low fire. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot. This dish can also be prepared in two ways, one making the dumpling pieces and freeze them in a cookie sheet and when you are ready, you just have to make the dal and add the dumpling pieces to the dal. Basically for preparing the dhoklis, wheat flour, sesame seeds, thyme, green chili paste, oil, salt and water is used. Dough is prepared by mixing all the ingredients. It is then rolled out like flat bread. Diamond shaped dhoklis are cut and are brushed with oil on both the sides.

Once done, these diamonds are dipped in the lentil soup and cooked with it and eaten with hot clarified butter and pickles. There are many variations of preparing this recipe of Dhokli according to the taste and preferences of people. It can be made spicy and even mild.

Jaggery is sometimes added to the dish to make it sweet and spicy. Peanuts and cashews also are added in many places to add to the taste of Dal Dhokli recipe. Veggies such as pumpkins, beans, potatoes and capsicum are also added in many Dal Dhokli dishes. Dal Dhokli is a healthy and nutritious meal that offers sufficient nutrition to the body. The dish is rich in proteins, iron, calcium and dietary fiber. It is also a good source of nutrition for the kids.
