French apple coffee cake is fun, flavorful and a moist cake that tastes amazing to the palate. This cake has a wonderful soft texture with just the right amount of sweetness and flavor from cinnamon. This is an excellent recipe if you are looking to bake something quick with apples. Not having apples would not make much difference as this is nicely whipped with a flash of apple pie filling.

This is a classic cake which can be eaten at tea time or snack time. These cakes are typically flavored with cinnamon, seeds, nuts and fruits. They sometimes also have a crumbly or crumb topping or a light glaze drizzle. Some similarity to teacakes may be found, though teacakes are often smaller bite size items served with tea.

For making any extraordinary cake, one should use the freshest eggs, high quality flour and sugar, pure butter which are the main cornerstones to good baking. Under this name, ‘French apple coffee cake’, a coffee cake does not contain coffee. They are typically single layer cakes that may be square or rectangular or loaf-shaped rectangular cakes.

Generally a coffee cake has a base of vanilla cake that is topped off with some apples cooked into a kind of homemade apple pie filling. The cake base is tender and has a good flavor, with an almost pound cake-like density that supports all the layers of topping extremely well. The apples are not fully cooked before they are added as a layer to the cake, but getting them started on the stove ensures that they will be fully cooked and tender when the cake is done.

French Apple Coffee cake is an appetizing breakfast cake topped with some brown sugar, melted butter and punched with cinnamon flavor. It would also taste really good served with a little scoop of vegan ice cream. You’ll love making and mix this cake up, though you will be in for a dessert of sophisticated flavor, a batter with apple pie  filling in a total breeze.

You might be surprised at how many apples are incorporated into the cake batter, but it actually turns out quite well; the top becomes brown and crispy, while the interior, chock full of apples, and remains soft and moist. If you do not have apples, a brilliant idea is use an apple pie filling in this coffee cake, it makes the cake enticing.

To prepare this soft and crumbling French Apple coffee cake, firstly preheat oven to 350 degree F In a mixing bowl, mix 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, sour milk, eggs, flour, soda, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and salt. Combine all the ingredients of the cake and mix well.

Fold in filling and spread into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Spread 1/2 of the batter in the bottom of a 9×11″ (or whatever) greased baking dish. The batter should be thick and nearly dough-like, as this will prevent the filling from sinking to the bottom of the pan. Add 1 can apple pie filling evenly over the top.

Spoon the rest of the batter over the top in clumps, leaving some of the apple filling showing through. Make topping with ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon and nuts. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.

Pour melted butter over hot cake with done. Let this cake cool for a bit before cutting and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to serve; the cake holds up really well and doesn’t fall apart when slicing.

Tip: Be sure not to under bake. You may wish to cover the coffee cake with aluminum foil for the last 20-30 minutes to prevent over-browning. Do try other variations by substituting peach or other pie filling. Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the apple mixture, would make it crunchy and crispier. French Apple Coffee Cake tastes delicious when served warm or at room temperature, with vanilla sauce, ice cream, or crème Chantilly.
