Fish Masala with poppy seeds
Wow! The thought of Fish masala with poppy seeds is really very enticing and craving. This is a delicious recipe of fish marinated in a paste of spices and condiments and pan fried to perfection. One of the main items in a complete South Indian seafood meal is fish fry. It has to be one of the easiest yet can be made in different varieties.

Masala fish fry is a very tasty exotic fish preparation that has great aroma of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, coconut, garam masala and fresh curry leaves. The masala fish fry is a highly recommended dish for all the fish lovers and can also be eaten as snack.

It’s a very tasty and flavorful dish that the whole family will enjoy. Fish fry is definitely one the best seafood entrees in India especially popular in the coastal areas of India. This dish is one of the delicious fish fry, which goes excellent with cold beer.
Its aromatic nutty flavors of poppy seeds and sesame seeds are very simple and quick to make. The fried fish marinated in the spices results in this aromatic, slightly tangy, fresh, simply delicious fish fry. Everybody’s mouth would water while just describing or smelling the fragrance of the dish.
Adjust amount of spices according to your tolerance for spiciness and you can use either lemon juice for sourness. Serve it with either fresh salad or rice, as a starter or part of the main course. The masala fish fry is made of the popular Black Sole or the river sole fish which has just a single long bone. The river sole or black sole is a slightly meaty fish which can also be called Dover Sole.
It has an excellent flavor and texture compared to other types of sole and is a little more expensive. Black sole is sold in portions; it can range from grey to dark brown in color and the underside is a creamy ivory color. You can buy a fillet of fish and fold one half over the other just remember to season the fillets well before cooking.
The poppy seeds are one of the vital ingredients in making of the masala fish fry.
White poppy seeds are often referred to as 'Indian', 'Middle Eastern' or 'Asian' since they are featured in these cuisines. Poppy seed complements honey spread bread, giving a nice contrast of texture. Fried in butter, poppy seed can be added to noodles or pasta.
It flavors vegetables and their accompanying sauces, especially asparagus and root vegetables. Sprinkled into coleslaw, the seeds give a contrast of both color and texture. They are used to top creamed potatoes and au gratin dishes, and sometimes appear in fish dishes. The nutritional value of poppy seeds lies mostly in the amount of protein, calcium, carbohydrates and minerals they contain.
As for the minerals, they include the most important kinds, such as potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and sodium. Also, poppy seeds include a certain amount of calories, but they are not too hard for the metabolism to burn. In Middle Eastern and Jewish cookery poppy seeds go on breads, cakes and candies and are often seen studding pretzels.
The white poppy seed is generally used on chapatti and few other Indian whole-wheat griddle breads and certain curries and varieties of mixed spice contain a small proportion of poppy. Its function in curry is partially to thicken the liquid and add texture.
For preparing the Masala fish fry, take a pan and dry roast poppy seeds till it attains a nice aroma and add sesame seeds and roast this also.
Add dry garam masala (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, black cumin or cumin seeds, shahi jeera), pepper corns and sauté till it gives a nice fragrance then add the desiccated coconut or coconut powder and fry.
Keep aside and let it cook. Chop onions and fry them till golden brown. In a blender make a fine paste of poppy seeds mixture adding little of water as possible.
Add the fried onions and make a fine paste. Now in a bowl add fish pieces, ginger garlic paste, coriander powder, turmeric, salt, chilli powder, lime juice, add the blended poppy seeds paste and mix well and keep it a side for 30min.
After 30 min, take a non stick pan add a little oil and spread the marinated fish in one layer and cook in a very slow flame once it is cooked on one side, When one sides gets cooked and browned up flip to the other side  then add curry leaves and lastly garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
Serve warm and you can also sprinkle a bit of lemon juice just before serving.
