Diversity is one of the characteristics best described for India. India is relatively a large country and every state has its own unique traditions, culture and most importantly an array of delicious and mouth-watering recipes. Food in India is diverse and one dish alone has a dozens of variations.

 

Socializing and snacking is the lifestyle of most above average Indian. Indians, especially the Hindus have lots of festivals and rituals to celebrate and every event has its own signature dish or speciality dish to be offered to the God, hence it becomes an important tradition to serve the family and friends with a variety of snacks ( Murukku, Chekkalu Rice cracker, Bhakerwadi, etc).

 

Most of these snacks are easy and quick to prepare. Some of the snacks also are accompanied with yummy, spicy and tangy dipping pickles or chutneys. Snacks are mostly eaten between meals or usually served with evening tea or coffee.

 

When it comes to Snacks & Appetizers, Indian cuisine has a special place because cooking is considered as an art in India and also due to its varied variations of mixed cuisines; we have a wide range of snacks and appetizers. Kids too love eating delicious & tangy snacks.

 

A snack is a portion of food often smaller than a regular meal, generally eaten between meals and some of the snacks in bigger portions can be eaten as main meal. Some of the popular Indian snacks and appetizers that you can expect to tickle your palates and satisfy your cravings include:

 

Chaat Is an assorted savoury snacks typically served at every road side tracks from big outlets to small carts in India, Pakistan and rest of South Asia. The basic ingredient in preparing the chaats are potatoes, boiled and mashed, other veggies, lemon juice, spices, and fresh herbs. The chaats are also served with various spicy, sweet and tangy sauces, chutneys and soups. 

 

Samosa This appetizer has already met many variations and has even been adapted in western recipes. Basically, it is a thin pastry that is stuffed with a filling of vegetables and spices. It is folded into a triangular shape and baked in an oven. Sometimes, vegetables are replaced with chicken added with flavourings. 

Gobi 65 Gobi 65/ Cauliflower 65 cooked the restaurant style is truly tempting and enticing. Blanched cauliflower florets nicely coated with a spiced batter and deep fried twice to give that zest and crunchiness. Gobi 65 is a popular appetizer or starter. 

Masala Rice Balls Crispy fried rice balls filled with potato masala mixture which we make for our samosas and deep fried, served with sweet or mint chutney. 

Vegetable cutlet Vegetable cutlet is an easy and simple snack to prepare. It includes most of the vegetables like the potato, carrots, beans, peas and spices etc. You can also add corns to have a healthier dish. 

Veggie Pops Veggie pops are excellent snack made with a mix of vegetables made into dumplings coated with bread crumbs and deep fried until crisp. 

Onion Kachori Onion Kachori or commonly known as Pyaaz ki kachori is an amazing snack dish. This is made by stuffing a yummy onion mix in the kachori and fried. 

Dhokla  It is also considered as fast food in India, and is commonly served in streets as well. The basic ingredients of dhokla include chickpeas, which are ground and soaked in water. The mixture is kneaded into a roll, and steamed. In some recipes, dhokla is deep-fried, and served with herbs, spices, and chutney. 

Poha Chivda Poha, commonly known as pressed or beaten rice. Other names are Poha, Chudwey, Aval, Atukulu or Avalakki. Crispy beaten rice flavoured with peanuts and spices makes a delicious light and nutritious snack. It is one of the most popular breakfast dishes prepared in Maharashtra and Gujarat. This snack is popularly called as the Bombay mix. 

Dahi Vada Dahi vada (lentil dumplings) is a popular Indian chaat, prepared by soaking vadas in thick dahi. The hot deep fried vadas are first soaked in water and then transferred to thick beaten yogurt. These are great as a side dish for a formal dinner.

Masala Vada  Masala Vada is basically a medium-sized dumpling served with sambhar, coriander chutney, coconut chutney or tomato ketchup along with tea or coffee, perfect as evening tiffin. Its main ingredients are channa dal, chopped onions, curry leaves, ginger and green chillies. Masala vada is best served hot. 

Pakoras  Pakoras are the most popular and familiar snack from the Indian subcontinent often complemented with tamarind chutney and hot chai (tea). These deep fried crispy delights are made with a variety of vegetables that are dipped into a spicy batter made with gram flour and deep fried. These delicious and yummy hot fritters are often served as an appetizer and during festivals accompanied with chutneys.

Unlike the potato bajji or the banana chilli bajji, the batter for the onion pakoda is different. 

Moong Dal Pakoda Moong dal pakoda made with moong dal is combined with spices, onions, green chillies, fresh herbs, mixed together and deep fried to make lentil based fritters.

Spinach and Corn fritters Spinach and corn fritters are amazing snack that taste extremely tasty. Corn and spinach mixed with some garlicky and nutmeg flavours combined together with spices and deep fried until done. 

Sabudana Vada Sabudana vada is fried dumplings made of sago, rice flour and spices and served with spicy green chutney. Sabudana Vada is a traditional snack from Maharashtra. Sabudana is the main ingredient for this dish and is widely used in the Northern western parts of India. 

Cabbage Pakoda Cabbage needs to be sliced into thin strips along with onions before combining in chick pea flour, rice flour, ginger garlic paste, curry leaves and green chillis and deep fried to a golden brown color. Serve warm with a hot cup of tea on a rainy day and you have a snack to provide comfort to your body and soul. 

Palak Spinach Pakoda Crispy spinach fry/ Palak Pakoda is a delicious and crispy fritters prepared with spinach leaves coated with spicy chick pea flour. 

Mirchi Vada Mirchi Vada or should we also call it Jodhpuri Mirchi Bada which is a very popular namkeen snack in the state of Rajasthan. The traditional Mirchi bada is made of the large variety of green peppers stuffed with a spicy potato mix, coated with gram flour and deep fried until slightly golden in colour. 

Murukku Also known as Chakli is a delicious, indulging and crispy snack. It is typically made from rice flour batter mixed with urad dal flour and spiced with asafeotida, cumin, ajwain or chilli. The batter or dough is squeezed through a murukku mould with a star-shaped nozzle to form a circular spiral coil and then deep fried till golden and crispy. This can be served as an evening snack with tea or coffee. Perfect for any festive occasion! 

Aloo Tikki This crisp and spicy potato snack has been a popular Indian street food. Indian snacks and appetizers can even be made as special dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You don’t have to wait for special festivals in India to enjoy sumptuous dishes and mouth watering snacks. With their huge array of sauces, soups, condiments, and spices, Indian cuisine offers no boundaries when it comes to taste.
