Ingredients used in Subzi Dal
• Mixed vegetables (capsicum, carrots & peas) finely chopped - - 1 cup.
• Moong dal (split yellow gram) - - 1/3 cup.
• Toor dal (split gram) - - 1/3 cup.
• Masoor dal (split red lentils) - - 1/3 cup.
• Mustard seeds - - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Cumin seeds (jeera) - - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Curry leaves - - 6-8 leaf.
• Asafoetida (hing) - - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Chopped green chilies - - 1 no.
• Chopped onion - - 1 no.
• Ginger-green chili paste - - 2 teaspoons.
• Garlic paste - - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Finely chopped tomato - - 1 big.
• Red chili powder - - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Turmeric powder - - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Chopped coriander, for garnishing - - 1 cup.
• Salt - - to taste.
• Oil - - as required.
• Water - - as required.
Method:
  • Wash and pressure-cook the dals together with 2 cups of water till the dals are tender. Keep aside.
  • Heat the oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they crackle, add the curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Add chopped green chilies, onion and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add the ginger-green chili paste, garlic paste, tomato and sauté for 3 to 4 more minutes.
  • Add the chilli powder, turmeric powder, mixed vegetables and mix well.
  • Add the dals, salt and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Garnish with the chopped coriander and serve hot.

Tip: You can use any left-over vegetable or curry instead of the mixed vegetables. This way you will have a different flavor each time.
