Ingredients used in Turai Chana Dal
• Ridge gourd / turai (chopped) - 250 grams.
• Green chillies ( chopped) - 4 number.
• Coriander powder - 1 tablespoon.
• Salt - to taste.
• Onion (chopped) - 1 number.
• Garlic (chopped) - 4 cloves.
• Turmeric powder - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Curry leaves - 2 springs.
• Cumin seeds - half tea spoon.
• Mustard seeds - half tea spoon.
• Tomato (chopped) - 3 number.
• Chana dal - 100 grams.
• Coconut grated - 1 tablespoon.
• Coriander leaves(chopped) - 1 bunch.
• Oil - as required.
Method:
  • Pressure cook chana dal to a grainy consistency. Strain left over water of cooked dal and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when mustard seeds splutter.
  • Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, turmeric powder, chopped garlic, saute it.
  • Now, add chopped onions, salt and cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Then add chopped green chillies, ridge gourd, chopped tomatoes (optional) along with chana dal water and cook till ridge gourd is tender.
  • Season it with coriander powder and let it cook with closed lid for about 4 minutes
  • Add boiled chana dal, freshly grated coconut to the above pan and cook it well.
  • At last, add chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

Serve it hot with roti and phulka's.

I can't get "ridge gourd" (I guess that is the spelling??) here in Germany, what could I use a a replacement? Kohlrabi comes to mind.
