This comes from Nagpur region where there is a large Saoji community and their cuisine is supposed to be very traditional and spicy.Majority of the savji people are non vegetarian and hence preparation of variety of meat dishes is very common in the community.

Savaji Spicy Mutton Masala

Ingredients used in Savaji Spicy Mutton Masala
• Lamb meat - 6 pieces.
• Tomato - 5 numbers.
• Red chili powder - 6 tablespoons.
• Turmeric powder - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Dry coconut - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Fresh coconut - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Ginger - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Garlic - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Coriander powder - 1 tea spoon.
• Cloves - 3 numbers.
• Cardamom - 2 numbers.
• Cinnamon stick (inch) - 2 numbers.
• Poppy seeds - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Sesame seeds - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Salt - to taste.
• Oil - as required.
• Water - as required.
• Cumin seeds - 1 tea spoon.
Method:
  • In a jar, add dry coconut, ginger, garlic, 2 cloves, 1 cardamom, cinnamon stick, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and grind it into fine paste.
  • Dry roast coriander powder, 1 cardamom, 1 clove and cumin seeds. Let it cool.
  • Put the roasted mixture into jar and grind into fine powder.
  • In a pan, add meat, red chili powder, turmeric powder,roasted masala powder, oil and salt.
  • Add 4 cups of water and mix it properly.
  • Keep it on medium flame for 25 minutes.
  • When meat is cooked then add tomoto paste and let it cook for 5 minutes more on low flame
  • Now add coconut masala paste and let it cook for 5 minutes.
