E-WASTE is a shortening of electronic waste. Any improperly disposed electronics can be classified as e-waste. You are most welcome to change most of your used electronic goods like personal computer, cell phones, refrigerator or for that mattter any electronic or electrical gadgets, but remember that you need to be careful while disposing the old ones.

Throwing your e-waste into the dustbins is not the right way to dispose of the junk and this will end up adding more to e-waste which creates problems for the ecology in general and directly or indirectly for living beings around through air, water and soil pollution. Electronic waste (e-waste) comprises of numerous waste electronics/electrical goods that are not fit for their originally intended use or have reached their end of life.

This may include items such as computers, servers, mainframes, monitors, CDs, printers, scanners, copiers, calculators, fax machines, battery cells, cellular phones, transceivers, TVs, medical apparatus and electronic components besides white goods such as refrigerators and air-conditioners.

E-waste contains valuable materials such as copper, silver, gold and platinum which could be processed for their recovery. Due to the fast moving high technology of modern world developing new electronics and discarding old ones is a huge problem in brewing. The recycling procedures used in disposal centers in major cities lead to toxic materials like lead to seep into the surrounding environment.

There are various toxic substances used in consumer electronics like lead, cadmium, mercury and plastics. The question arises here is how do we manage this huge chunk of solid waste which includes: Municipal waste, Electronic waste, biomedical waste and Industrial waste. Studies have shown that about 40 million ton of E-waste is produced globally in which about 0.8 million ton is contributed by India.

The major components of e-waste management are:

1. e-waste collection, sorting and transportation

2. e-waste recycling; it involves dismantling, recovery of valuable resource, sale of dismantled parts and export of processed waste for precious metal recovery The stakeholders, i.e.
