Onion Sambar is a very popular South Indian sambar. It goes well with rice and most South Indian tiffins (breakfast) items like idli, dosa, vada, upma etc.
- Cook toor dal with water and chopped onions.
- In a hot pan add coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds, rice, peppercorns, red chilies and roast it nicely.
- Transfer into a mixie jar and add carrot, shallots, fresh coconut, turmeric, water and blend it like a paste.
- In a pan add oil, methi seeds, mustard seeds, green chilies, curry leaves, shallots, carrots, onions and saute it.
- Then add salt, tamarind pulp, turmeric, water then cover it and simmer it for 7-8 minutes.
- After 8minutes drop the paste into the pan and add cooked toor dal.
- Simmer it then and lastly add sugar, coriander leaves.
- When it is cooked transfer into a serving bowl.
