Drumstick Tomato Curry is a simple and basic curry dish that is prepared is almost every Indian house. This dish is made with drumstick pieces cooked in spicy tomato gravy that goes well with naan, roti, chapatti or rice. The curry is very easy to prepare, highly flavourful, the combination of drumstick and tomato tang complement well together giving an excellent savour to the dish.

Drumstick is scientifically known as Moringa oleifera and locally known as Shevaga (in Marathi), Murungai (Tamil), Muringnga (Malayalam) and Munagakaya (Telugu) in different Indian languages. Drumstick is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Moringa comes from the Moringaceae family.

In South India, it is used in preparing a number of dishes especially the sambar which is a popular lentil stew cooked almost daily in every Tamilian household. In other parts of India, especially West Bengal and Bangladesh, it is made into a variety of curry dishes by mixing with coconut, poppy seeds, and mustard or boiled until the drumsticks are semi-soft and consumed directly without any extra processing or cooking.

It is used in curries, sambars, kormas, and dals, although it is also used to add flavor to cutlets, etc. In Maharashtra, the pods are used in sweet & sour curries called Aamatee. Drumstick tree is basically a very common tree widely grown across India and grown in the backyard of most Indian homes. There is a saying that if you have a drumstick tree in your garden that symbolizes that you have a doctor at home.

It is the best home remedial medicine used for curing most of the common diseases and is the most recommended spinach variety for all the age groups. Drumstick leaves is a powerhouse with innumerable health benefits. Doctor suggests the intake of drumstick leaves in your regular diet especially for diabetic patients as they have the power of reducing the sugar levels in the blood. Thus do include drumstick leaves in your diet at least once a week and protect yourself from certain degenerative diseases. They are also rich in iron, calcium and vitamin C.

Tomato is typically red in colour, savoury, edible fruit originated from South America and spread around the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas.  Now there are many varieties widely grown in green houses in cooler climates. The first domesticated tomato may have been a little yellow fruit, similar in size to a cherry tomato, grown by the Aztecs of Central Mexico.

According to the writings of Aztec, tomatoes were prepared with peppers, corn and salt. The word tomato comes from the Aztec “tomatl”, literally means “the swelling fruit”. Tomato is one very important ingredient used in the Indian cuisine. These lovely red cute glossy shiny vegetable is almost used in every Indian curry that given a tangy taste to the dish. Varied recipes are prepared with this vegetable like the tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato juice, tomato puree, tomato rasam and so many to go in the list.

Tomatoes are available in different forms such as fresh both raw green and ripe, sun-dried, pickled, paste and pureed. They are consumed in diverse ways, including raw, or as ingredient in various dishes, sauces, salads and drinks. Traditionally homemade onion-tomato gravy is the key ingredient used as a base for all sorts of vegetables, boiled eggs, paneer or chicken curries. Tomatoes are valued mainly for their sweetish tangy taste, they’re juicy and delicious.

The tomato fruit is consumed in varied ways, including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes and sauces, and in drinks. The fruit is rich in lycopene, which may have beneficial health effects. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that decreases the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. Cooked tomato products, sauces and juices contain higher amounts of lycopene than raw tomatoes due to greater concentration.

Tomatoes are loaded with many, many health benefits. In fact, they are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in a seemingly endless number of dishes, as well as being great to eat alone. Tomato is an important ingredient in almost every household. Below listed are some of my favourite dishes made with tomatoes giving a nice taste and texture to the dish:
