DAL AND BITTER MELON CURRY

Ingredients used in DAL AND BITTER MELON CURRY
• Bitter melon - 100 grams.
• Oil - as required.
• Mustard seeds - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Cumin seeds - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Red chilli - 3 numbers.
• Chanadal - ½ tea spoon.
• Urad dal - ½ tea spoon.
• Hing - 1 pinch.
• Turmeric powder - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Curry leaves - 2 springs.
• Onion - 2 numbers.
• Chili powder - 1 tea spoon.
• Tomatoes - 3 numbers.
• Tamarind juice - 1/4 cup.
• Toor dal (boiled) - ½ cup.
• Coriander leaves - ½ bunch.
• Salt - to taste.
• Fresh grated coconut - 1/4 cup.
Method:
  • Cut the bitter melon into lengthwise and scoop out the seeds.
  • Heat oil in a kadai and fry the bitter melon pieces till it is brown in color.
  • Remove the excess oil and add mustard seeds when they crackle add cumin seeds, red chili, chana dal, urad dal, hing saute it for 2 minutes.
  • Then add turmeric powder, curry leaves, onions saute the onions till it is cooked.
  • Add chili powder, tomato pieces, tamarind juice put the lid on and cook it till the tomatoes soft.
  • In this add fried bitter melon, 80%cooked toor dal, freshly grated coconut cook this for 2 minutes with the lid on.
  • Garnish with coriander and serve with chapati or roti.
