Ingredients used in Bengali Cholar Dal
• Salt - to taste.
• Raisins - 1 tablespoon.
• Green chilly - 4 numbers.
• Ginger chopped - 1 tea spoon.
• Turmeric powder - 1/4 tea spoon.
• Cloves - 4 numbers.
• Cumin seeds - 1/2 tea spoon.
• Bay leaves - 2 numbers.
• Red chilly - 2 numbers.
• Ghee - 1 tablespoon.
• Channa dal (bengal gram dal) - 200 grams.
• Coconut (small pieces) - 2 tablespoons.
• Sugar - 1 tablespoon.
• Coriander chopped - 1 tablespoon.
Method:
  • First, soak channa dal for 1 hour and pressure cook it until tender.
  • Heat ghee in a pan add whole red chilly, bay leaves, cumin seeds, cloves, turmeric powder, chopped ginger, green chilly, raisins, salt, coconut (cut small pieces)saute this for few minutes add water, sugar.
  • It comes to boil and add cooked dal cook for few minutes, garnish with chopped coriander leaves and garam masala and serve it.

One small tip that takes the cholar dal a notch higher is to put a pinch of fresh ground garam masala and mixing in a little bit of butter or ghee before serving. This tip is from my mom and grandmom.
